About Beeta Rajapaksha...I was born and raised in Beravāvala,
a lovely village situated about 24 kilometres from Colombo. Having studied at the Batakättara Government School and at Sri Sōbhitha Vidyālaya, Mampē I gained entry to the University of Peradeniya in 1965. However, as I was reluctant to live away from my native village, I joined the Colombo division of the University of Peradeniya. That was a golden era of academic excellence at that University. I had the honour of studying Sinhala literature, economics and history under the erudite guidance of Professors P.B. Sannasgala and A.D.V.De.S Indraratne as well as Profesessors J.B. Dissanayake and Mrs.Lorna Devaraja. After graduating with a BA Degree in 1968 I worked for a short period at the Ceylon Coconut Board. However, after the birth of my daughter I became a full-time housewife. Despite residing in Colombo for many decades I have not forgotten my native village or its lifestyle. This enabled me to relate many interesting stories of my childhood in my book titled Apē Lamā Lōkaya:1950. Due to many requests, an English version was also published, titled Our Childhood In Ceylon:1950. I am also an ardent nature-lover from my childhood. Having noticed that little children now do not have elders at home to turn to when bothered by questions about natural phenomena I wrote a set of 7 booklets. Titled The World Around Us, they were written based on my observations of nature. Another passion of mine is cooking. Constantly experimenting in the kitchen has led me to many a delicious discovery. Having written them down for the future use of my daughter I was finally persuaded to publish a book of 250 recipes titled Katata Rasata Hanikata Uyamu. An English version titled Tasty 'n Easy Sri Lankan Recipes was also published, chiefly for the benefit of Sri Lankan expatriates. A foldable collection of easy recipes for Sri Lankan migrant workers and students was also inspired by my first cookery book. The very first Sri Lankan cookery book for children titled Sri Lankan Cooking Magic For Kids is yet another cookery book written by me due to a special request. I am extremely happy to be able to share my knowledge and experiences with others through my writing. Hopefully, this website will provide you with insight about not only my books but also about my interests. |
