Hot days are here again in Sri Lanka and everyone is feeling the heat. However, relief is at hand if you use a few simple ingredients to make a sago porridge. Whilst most Sri Lankan housewives know how to make sago cunjee, it is a little too cooling in its effects for those suffering from phlegm-related ailments. This is due to using coconut milk to make the cunjee. However, you and your loved ones can still enjoy a delicious dessert without the side-effects of coconut milk by following my recipe for sago porridge. It is a very straightforward recipe which can be prepared easily and quickly. One of the ingredients you will need is sugar cane jaggery. |
It is available as cubes from most grocery stores as well as supermarkets. Whilst you can also use jaggery made from the jaggery palm sap (kitul), it has an extremely cooling effect. Since our aim is to prepare a dessert which can be enjoyed by all without triggering health issues I recommend using sugar cane jaggery. Of course, if your family or guests have no such health concerns, then you can use 2 big cubes of kitul jaggery about 1"x1"x1" each.
